June 9, 2011 - Theme: Yes You Can

Hello Fellow Linguists of Listowel and Friends,

At Thursday's Linguists of Listowel meeting there were 14 members in attendance. Diane Bender called the meeting to order by describing her role and reading a story from a book by Dr Phil's wife. Then she introduced Keith Stoltz as the chairperson. Keith opened the meeting by explaining to everyone how we could incorporate our theme of "Yes, You Can". He had a very funny joke and had great famous quotes throughout the meeting that tied into theme. The Theme of the meeting - Yes You Can was used 14 times.

Lucy D'Arcey started the laughs going with a very funny joke for Joke of the Day. Then for Inspirational Thought, I read a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. Leo Brisebois held the role of Toast and Timer and he gave a toast to Canada and all the things that we are able to do. Lucy D'Arcey for Literary Corner read a very interesting passage from "The Book of Awakenings". Heidi Menzi held the role of Grammarian and she challenged us to use the word "Embelish" which was used 4 times.

Our first speaker was Lorna Vanderploeg and she completed her 6th speech entitled "How to Deliver Difficult Messages". Next, Sharon D'Arcey completed her 10th speech entitled "Excuses, Excuses, Excuses". Congratulations on completing your Competent Communicator manual!

Jane Stoltz was our
Table Topics Master and she had everyone read Tongue Twisters (three times....slow at first, faster and very fast). The winner was Audrey Orth. Keith McCluskie gave an evaluation for Lorna's speech and George Nichol evaluated Sharon D'Arcey's speech. Sharon Diehl gave the meeting an evaluation as our General Evaluator. We had a total of 74 laughs during the entire meeting.

After our meeting we enjoyed some refreshments provided by Jane Stoltz.

Please join us at next week's meeting with the theme, "Fabulous Fifties Plus Much More"

Brent
