District 86 Fall conference

Marge and Al Seawright both recieved their DTM Medallions.





Members attending for the weekend were Keith and Jane Stoltz, Diane Bender and Marie McCutcheon. Members attending on Saturday were George Nichol, Brent Jemmet, Holly and Leo Brisebois, Audrey Orth and Ken Grosvenor.

We were all very proud of Keith Stoltz- he represented Area 66 and the Linguists of Listowel very well. All of the Humourous speeches could tickle your funny bone and had members of the audience laughing uproarously. There were many educational workshops and inspiring speakers, delicious meals and great fun and fellowship with other toastmasters.

Tall Tales, August 7, 2008


The tall tales competition was to find the best exaggerator in toastmasters.
Did it really happen? We were often wide eyed with amazement at the stories that were told.
The best and the funniest liars were there.

All members judged the speeches as well.
Results were George Nichol First, Keith Stoltz second, Diane Bender third.




Jane asked if we were interested in performing a murder mystery this fall. She would get more information.
There will not be a regular meeting at St Paul’s on August 21, 2008. Members are encouraged to register for judges training workshop in Kitchener. We will meet at 5:30 pm at Crabby Joe’s and carpool. Let me know if you are able to go.

International Speech Contest is the only worldwide event organized by Toastmasters International, if there is a nirvana in speaking contest, this is it. It is going to be at TELUS Convention Centre, Calgary, Canada, and a 4-day conference from August 13 to 16, 2008.

Toastmasters July 10, 2008 was held at the home of Jean Van der straten.
Theme: Nursery Rhymes

Chairperson: Jean challenged everyone to debate news items from Listowel Banner as a nursery rhyme character. Jane won the contest with her views as Humpty Dumpty. Jane presented Jean with her #6 speech certificate.
There will be an August area executive at Jane Stoltz. Sept 4- Induction of Executive.
Sept 11 Humorous and table topic competition.
Speechcraft will start September 18, 2008. A picture could be sent to the Listowel banner with a testimonial from Jean about how much she learned from Speechcraft last fall. A display ad should also be sent.
Vote on last two members must be held.
A List of criteria for Toastmasters award will be circulated.

Awards and Appreciation Dinner meeting
At 6:45 George called the meeting to order and introduce chairperson Jane.
George introduced Marilyn and Diana introduced herself.
Brian Camacho gave the loyal toast to Canada. He mention that he has travelled all around the world over the past year and he is always glad to be back home in Canada. Al Mann said grace and invited everyone to enjoy the potluck meal.
Brent challenged everyone to use the word Fortuitous during the meeting. Audrey presented literary corner. Jean gave her number 10 speech from the Competent Communicator Manual. Title of the speech was High School Graduation. Congratulations Jean!!
Diana Snowden is president of Hanover Toastmasters and gave a 30 Minute entitled A successful, confident person is a RARE KAT.

Everyone enjoyed her confidence and enthusiasm.

Diane presented Jane with the Brenda Karges Memorial Award for her outstanding job as president of the Linguists of Listowel 2007-8.
Jane adjourned the meeting.

Audrey's toast included our many time zone's, Diane gave a time management reading on 7 tips to keep yourself on time. Leo gave a terrific speech #9 on Bark Buster's and Brent's # 6 speech gave everyone food for thought on Time for a Change. Evaluator's Wayne Stoltz & Brian Camacho gave excellent points for each speaker.Table Topic's by Keith was terrific! Alan Mann won the best table topics award. It was a timely meeting!!!!

Theme: Rain

Audrey Orth called the meeting to order and introduced chairperson Jean Van Der Straeten.
She welcomed Area Governor Marge and Western Division Governor Al Seawright. Keith Stoltz gave the loyal toast and was the timer for the evening.
Diane presented the word controversial or controversy. She mentioned that Canadians love to talk about the weather and there is often controversy over the forecasts. The word was used 17 times throughout the evening.
George Nichol was in charge of literary corner. Audrey Orth gave an Off the Cuff speech about some of her experiences in the rain. Diane Bender presented an educational article from Toastmasters magazine October 2004 about speaking on a controversial topic! Wayne Stoltz gave an Off the Cuff speech about an inspiring graduation he had recently attended. All members took a few minutes to write evaluations for the speakers.
Jane led with Table Topics and Wayne won the Table Topics award.
Marge shared her enthusiasm for Youth Group Speechcraft and Graduation Ceremonies that were held in Mount Forest.
Jean closed the meeting with a poem by Frank Ash “I Like to Look in Puddles”

Theme: Numbers



Jane called the meeting to order and introduced Leo Brisebois. Brent gave the loyal toast to Canada and performed as timer for the evening.
George read a Mother’s day Poem. Jane challenged everyone with the word Moiety. It can mean a small portion or two equal parts. It is also similar in the French language.
Keith presented a short workshop “Make a Good first impression in seven seconds.” Some points to consider are 1. Room setup. 2. Be on stage as soon as you enter the room. 3. 90% of first impression is appearance and tone of voice. 4. Hair style. 5. Stand tall. 6. Good eye contact and firm handshake. 7. Focus on Audience.
Jean did speech #7 in CC manual with a focus on Research your topic. The title of her speech was Pass it on and she stressed the eight signs of heart attach and how important the first two hours are to get help. She used pictures reinforce her points. Jane evaluated with many glow points and a couple of grow points.
For table topics Diane had everyone choose a coin from an envelope and challenged members to speak about something that might have happened that year and to use as many numbers as possible. Jane and Leo tied for first place. Chairperson Leo, adjourned the meeting. Diane Bender VP Public Relations gave everyone a Newsletter.

VP of Education Marie had surprise envelopes for everyone. When we opened them up we found out what position we could serve as for the evening.

Chairperson Jane Stoltz welcomed all members. She shared some Canadian Quotes in her opening address. Wayne Stoltz gave a toast to Canada and acted as timer.

Keith Stoltz gave a 13 minute speech on his experiences snorkelling and swimming with the sharks.
Jean was the surprise table topics master and challenged everyone to speak for one minute on the topic they pulled out of the envelope. George won the table topics award.
Marie was grammarian and noticed several filler words throughout the meeting. She would like us to be on the lookout for the filler word "so".
Quizmaster George had some great quotes from the members. Diane presented the General Evaluation. She welcomed the new slate of officers for 2008-9.

Tony Martens was our Target Speaker from the Clinton Communications Club who spoke on his Journey in making fold up desk beds. He has graduated from single, to double to now king size fold up beds. Way to go Tony!

Marge Seawright was our Chief Judge for both contests and as always did a great job!

I would like to thank everyone who helped out with the contest last night and for those who brought refreshments.

It's a great team effort!

Next week our theme is Education, please let Marie know what role you would like to partake in.

Saturday April 26th is an area executive meeting at the Clinton Agricultural Building from 1 - 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Thursday May 1st is our elections meeting...I encourage everyone to think about what role they would be interested in.

Thursday March 6th is an executive meeting following our regular meeting.

Call to Order: We welcomed former member Diane Russell back for an evening of fun and entertainment.

Loyal Toast was given by Leo.
Alan Mann challenged us with the word Dysphoric. It means a chronic feeling of discontent.
Literary Corner- Audrey read from Country Magazine “Grampa’s Greatest Gift”
Educational module from the better Speaker Series “Closing the Sale” was presented by Diane.
Wayne Stoltz gave a manual speech Get to the Point. His title was “Come Cruise with me”. It sounded like a wonderful Winter Haven! Marie evaluated.
George led Table topics portion of the meeting.
Quizmaster was Brent. Everyone listened very carefully throughout the meeting.

Marie, Audrey, Jane, George, Leo, Diane presented the murder mystery Little Sicily to the Atwood Lions club

Murder Mystery Cast don't forget to polish up on your characters Feb 20th is when we present it again and we should try to run through a quick rehearsal because Jane is stepping in as Madame Clair Voyant.

Feb 7 theme- Catalogues


Chair-Jane welcomed everyone with a stack of magazines from her house. She mentioned the kind of catalogue that she thought each member would enjoy.
Toast annd Timer-George
Language enricher-Leo gave us the words catalog and catalogue. It was used many times throughout the meeting.
Educational spot light-Audrey reviewed all of the wonderful items in the toastmasters catalogue. She did a very lively presentation and encouraged members to purchase items with the toastmasters logo to improve our public relations and let everyone know about this great organization.
Speaker-Brent presented speech # 4 from his competent communicator manual. His speech title was "What I will be doing a lot of When I Retire" He spoke about his goals to become a great golpher. He spoke with confidence and enthusiasm for this sport.
Evaluator- Diane was very impressed with his speech and praised his use of humour and improved use of gestures and voice variations.
Table Topics was led by Keith. He passed around an envelope of Sears catague advertisements and challenged everyone to make a sale. Audrey won the trophy for her smooth talking sales pitch.
Wayne was quiz master and challenged us to remember all the important quotes of the evening!

Theme Fire and Ice
The last week of January ended with Fire and Ice. A small attendance with lots of warmth and sub zero temperatures prevailed throughout the evening. George Nichol did an excellent job on chair and began the evening with a Robert Frost poem on 'fire and ice'. We had two loyal toasts in the evening by Brent Jemmett and Elizabeth Coghlin ...way to go! Our word for the evening was 'brimstone' which was used by everyone. Jane gave an Educational Module on Gaining New Members is working towards getting another CL by June. Brent did a wonderful job on Table Topics and the winners were Audrey Orth and George Nichol. Next week's theme is Catalogues and the International and Evaluation Contest is fast approaching on Thursday February 21st. Lots of time for everyone to prepare a speech. Come on out and join in the fun at toastmasters! Remember the female gender is in the lead so far.

Marie loves poetry and had written a short poem for every member as they were introduced throughout the meeting.
Keith presented Jean with her name tag and officially welcomed her to Linguists of Listowel.

Loyal Toast and Timer………Elizabeth read a poem celebrating Canada.
Language Enricher …George presented the word parsimony which means undue sparingness in the expenditure of money.

Literary Corner........Audrey read a selection of poetry from Robert Burns. Tomorrow is Robbie Burns Day and she wore a beautiful Scottish Kilt to set the mood.
Speaker........... Leo presented speech #6 on Vocal Variety from his Competent Communicator manual “When fear is all you hear”. Brian gave an excellent evaluation.
Tatiana was our guest speaker. She talked about her horse Ranger. She loves going for rides and caring for him. She will present this speech to her grade 5 class next week. Good luck.
Table Topics…..Diane challenged members to respond to a Grade 5 poetry test. Wayne won the award because of his quick wit and love of poetry.
General Evaluator……Keith was very pleased with the quality of this toastmasters meeting. Everyone was excited to welcome Elizabeth as a new member. She had taken Speechcraft course last spring.

Theme-Movies
Chair Jane had the meeting room set up to represent going to the movies. Everyone had a cup of freshly popped popcorn to snack on. She had a list of all the current movies and mentioned which movie each member would most likely want to see in the near future.
She welcome guests Marge and Dorothy from the Mount Forest Motivators.
Call to Order… Brent
Toast and Timer… George presented a toast to Canadian actors and especially John Candy. Dorothy… evaluated this advanced manual speech.
Language enricher… Leo challenged us with the French word Boniface which means owner of an inn. It was used 4 times during the meeting.

Speaker… Keith presented an advanced manual speech as he interviewed Brent about his love of sports. Marge evaluated
Speaker… Marie gave an excellent interpretive reading. Diane evaluated
Brian presented table topics by giving a movie name to one person to explain how well they liked the movie and then the next person had to tell everyone why they shouldn’t see it. Audrey won the Table Topics award.
My challenge to you is to remember who was quiz master and spoke for 2 min 38 sec.
General Evaluator was Audrey. She explained this role and how important it is to have immediate feedback with grow and glow points. She had lots of suggestions to help the meeting flow smoothly. She also complimented everyone on a job well done.
Jane closed the meeting with lots of movie quotes and quips.

Hi Toastmaster Members: It was definitely a black and white meeting as one looked around the room on Thursday January 10th! Audrey Orth brought the meeting alive with her humour with a great introduction for the chair Marie McCutcheon. Wayne Stoltz gave a great toast to Canada. Diane Bender delighted us with a humorous reading on Holstein cattle. Marie chaired the meeting well and told members of her exerience on the farm with holstein calves.
Elizabeth Coghlin gave a terrific #4 speech entitled Prelude to a Kiss (2 more to go) and Jane Stoltz and Brent Jemmett role played in Speaking with Ease #1 speech from Interpersonal Communication.
George chaired Table Topics and presented the members with black and white photos. Members had to speak about the people in the picture on a situation that happened either before or after. Audrey Orth was the overall winner at Table Topics for the evening.
A round table evaluation was done for Elizabeth Coghlin and Brent Jemmett evaluated Jane's speech.
We are doing another Murder Mystery on Wednesday February 20th for the Atwood Lion's Club.Our club on Thursday February 21st is doing the Int'l and Evaluation Contest!Induction Ceremony is slated for next week!
Leo Brisbois is coming up to his number sixth speech...looking forward to hearing it!Our area and district governor will be coming to our club next week...get those speeches ready. One speech per month is recommended!The ladies are up 3 to 2 against the guys...way to go ladies!Till then,Jane

Hi Everyone:What a great meeting last night to begin 2008!
Audrey Orth chaired the meeting very well with the Snowbirds theme. Everyone was named a snowbird and Audrey included some interesting facts on her selected birds. Marie McCutcheon was able to whisper out a great toast to Canada and successfully used one timer throughout the entire evening. George Nichol had an informative literary corner on Snowbirds (referring to people) and interesting migrating facts to the sunny south. Brent Jemmett entertained us with his literary corner with Casey at the Bat. Keith Stoltz had the rare opportunity to be interviewed by Opera Winfield last night on his latest website Foodkm.com. Leo Brisbois gave an informative talk on can you hear me?..although most of us had a difficult time hearing him!Jane Stoltz presented Table Topics with members taking a puff ball soaked in a mystery solution and how that smell brought back memories from their childhood.Both Diane Bender and Wayne Stoltz gave excellent evaluations to our speakers last evening. Brent Jemmett was the Table Topics winner.The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. with some great treats from Marie. Thank you.P.S. Marie, I have your container and will bring back next week.
