Linguists of Listowel
March 9, 2006
The Linguists of Listowel gathered at St Paul's Lutheran Church. The theme for the meeting was the "Luck of the Irish". It was an extremely foggy evening and members that did arrive said they were very lucky because the fog made driving very treacherous. George called the meeting to order at 7:15. He had a good Irish Joke and passed control over to Chairman Gary. Gary always has a joke to share and volunteers at every opportunity. He is keen to improve his speaking skills. Diane presented the loyal toast to Canada. She mentioned that Listowel has an Irish heritage and that everyone has a chance over the next two weeks to participate in Paddyfest celebrations. Our Irish ancestors came to Canada to find a better life in a country filled with freedom and opporunity for all. Paddyfest is about people celebrating Irish customs and raising money for a good cause. Idiosyncrasy was the word for language enricher. Keith presented Literary Corner. It was an interesting story called "A Dog's Diary". Jane gave an advanced manual speech about MSG. There are many hidden names for MSG and it can cause many people to feel very sick. There was a round table evaluation for her presentation. Keith had everyone participate in table topics. He had been to a Maddog theatre improv session and used some of the ideas he had learned to help people become more comfortable speaking in front of an audience. Eye contact is extremely important and challenging. Gary had a few quotes as quizmaster to check how well everyone was listening. There will be a murder mystery presentation at the Listowel legion March 16, 2006 at 7 pm. Guests are welcome. Diane
