Acceptance Speech
Thankyou Leo. I am honoured to accept the Brenda Karges Memorial Award. Thankyou everyone!
Brenda Karges Distinguished Toast Master said at a meeting “Where is everyone? If they are home watching television they are really missing out.” On the blog site I was impressed that she wrote “Come and laugh and learn with us next week. I expanded that for my theme for this year to be Listen, Laugh, Learn and Lead. “It was with enthusiastic members like her that our Toastmasters club grew. We used to meet at the Ford Dealership, for free, but she recognized that we were really too cramped to make new members feel comfortable. We moved here to the Lutheran Church Hall and have enjoyed the extra space –We can be as creative as we want. We can step out of our comfort zones and learn in a relaxed environment. Brenda was my mentor when I joined and continued to mentor me through my Toastmasters Journey. I am honored to accept this award.

(1 min) Membership: Keith McCluskie
Keith has been VP membership. He attended executive training and took the time to sort out the best way to induct new members. He devised a welcome package for new members so they would not be overwhelmed with rules and regulations and fees. I would say he has streamlined the work of vp membership. I would like to present Keith with this Toastmasters pin “The Courage to Conquer.”

(9 pm) Chairperson's Closing Remarks: Diane Bender
My goal this year was to make sure that everyone got what they were looking for out of their Toastmaster experience. I know that I am proud of each of you. You are wonderful inspiring people and I enjoyed every meeting. We have learned together, and worked together as a team.
Your executive was always willing to take on a leadership role and participated at executive meetings to make decisions that would benefit the Linguists of Listowel. Through your hard work we have earned the Presidents Distinguished Club ribbon for our Banner for 2009-10. I would like to Thank Area Governor Diana Snowden for her leadership. She set a goal for Area 66 and inspired us to do our best for toastmasters.
I wish our new executive a wonderful year.

Last night was an awesome inspiring evening of excellent speakers, good food and fellowship for toastmasters in Area 66. William Cassels shared his journey in overcoming a stuttering challenge. The doctors said he had a speech impediment and would never be employed , never have a social life, never be married and never have children.
Actually he was never unemployed, has an active social life, married and has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. In 1974 he joined Toastmasters and now speaks to audiences from 10 to 500. He definitely had a life outside of his job as a draftsman contract coordinator. He looked up to his friends at toastmasters who’s main fears were fear itself. He decided that even though he stuttered he would find a way to be as good a speaker as everyone else and even set a goal to be better. He did it! He was able to use music to enhance his speeches and miraculously calm his stuttering. He could write his own words to the cadence of the music and speak clearly, emphatically and with enough emotion to bring his audience to tears. What an inspiration he was to all of us.
Our next speaker, Karen Reese was Public Relations Officer for 2009-10 and she was a very passionate colourful and dramatic speaker. Her speech was “Expect more from Yourself” She encouraged us to never give into fear. Do the best that you can- you will be evaluated with glow and grow points but you will never be given a big plastic skunk and told that you stink. She asked us to write down our dreams and then give them a time line. Her surprise solution was to choose what you can do in five minutes. Try new things that will make you happy. The evening closed with Gregory C N Smith award winning speech “Genius of a Different Kind. We wish him all the best at the world competition.

George enjoys reading and travelling and I hear he is off to Europe very soon. He will be taking on the role of treasurer. A senior citizen said to his eighty-year old buddy:
'So I hear you're getting married?'
'Yep!'
'Do I know her?'
'Nope!'
'This woman, is she good looking?'
'Not really.'
'Is she a good cook?'
'Naw, she can't cook too well.'
'Does she have lots of money?'
'Nope! Poor as a church mouse.'
'Well, then, is she good in bed?'
'I don't know.'
'Why in the world do you want to marry her then?'
'Because she can still drive!'

When we were kids, our parents, grandparents and babysitters used stories to put us to sleep at night. Whether they read tales from books, told family stories passed down through generations or made up stories to suit our fancy, stories instilled values, pride and an understanding of how the world worked. Stories helped us envision what was possible, and cautionary tales told us what not to do!

Karen Reese, DTM
Karen Reese has been a Toastmaster since April 2003 when she joined the Thames Valley Toastmasters in London. Since then Karen has served in several club executive roles, as an Area Governor, as the District Club Rescue Chair, and is currently our District 86 Public Relations Office.
Karen believes that by taking advantage of all Toastmasters has to offer we can live up to our potential. She is the perfect role model. Proud mother of two, grandmother of four, and great grandmother of four-year old Nathanial, she sees these roles as her greatest accomplishment.
She started her career path as a registered nurse and more recently worked as a Retail Banking Trainer. Singing with the London Sweet Adeline Chorus and with the international award winning quartet, “In a Heartbeat”, Karen is clearly living her life to her potential.
We are fortunate to have Karen participate in our “Evening of Delight and Inspiration” on Wednesday, June 9 at Hanover Grace United Church.

P.I.A.N.O
Persistence In Achieving New Outcomes.

William (Bill) Cassels.
At sixteen, when applying for his first job Bill was told that due to his speech
impediment, he would:
never be employed
never have a social life
never be married
never have children. (He still does not know what a stammer has to do
with sex.)
He was never unemployed, even for a day, after he got his first job in Scotland. He got
his first job in Canada, in less than twelve hours, after his arrival at Toronto train station. Bill
has always had an active social life, was married 43 years to Christine, his late wife, has three
children and 6 grandchildren.
His apprenticeship was served in Scotland as a draftsperson. He immigrated to Canada in 1956 where he continued his drafting career.
In 1974 he joined Toastmasters, even though in day to day communication he avoided speaking by writing notes on pieces of paper. After many years of persistence the impediment is now under control. Today he speaks to audiences as few as 10 and as many as 500.

Hello Members:

What an interesting, fun, educational and unusally long meeting last evening!

Our chairperson for the evening, Keith McCluskie did a great job fulfilling his role wholeheartedly, in reminding the members of other people and organizations on how they contribute to doing a great job! Sharon D'Arcey delighted us with a funny mother and toddler joke. Rich Boertien gave the toast. Our grammarian Audrey Orth encouraged the members to use the word 'adulate' which means to flatter fawningly which was used at least 10 times throughout the evening. Marie McCutcheon delighted us with her own written poem reflecting the theme. We had three wonderful speakers last evening, Marilyn Hynes working on #3 of CC manual in 'hiccups' ; Rhea Longman, working on #9 CC Part #3 of King Henry V111's children; and Jane Stoltz working on #4 of the Humorously Speaking 'Embrace the Fear of skydiving'. Each of the speakers was rewarded with written & member evaluations . Due to time our general evaluator Sharon Diehl kept it short giving the best of the evening with a few grow areas. A good part of the latter evening was spent on an unplanned but educational parliamentary procedure portion. The topic for discussion was purchasing a video camera with members contributing monies for member's growth within the meetings, an amendment of determining the cost was added. The amended motion was carried. The original motion was defeated. Perhaps this topic should be included on our June executive meeting or business meeting within in our next regular meeting. Table Topics was conducted by Rich Boertien had a very interesting and simple task to members on thanking a member for their contributions within the club! Well done by all! A special thank you was given to our newest VP of PR..Sharon D'Arcey on our spectacular newsletter and regal invite to our June 24th Oscar Evening! A fantastic meeting that had a challenging set up change and room. Our guest for the evening was Lucy, Sharon D'Arcey's sister, come again! Next week our meeting will be returning to the back room in the church.

Good Evening Linguists of Listowel
We welcomed thirteen members and 5 guests to our meeting. Chairperson Rich carried the theme “The Power of Positive Thinking” throughout the meeting. George Nichol introduced Lorna and Val. Audrey introduced Piet and Anne. Sharon introduced her cousin Gail. Newest member George Stevers made everyone laugh with his joke of the day. Jessica gave the loyal toast and handled the timer with expertise. Leo challenged us with the word “urbane”. It was used many times during the meeting. Diane read and excerpt from Merri McCartney’s book “Shiny Thinking Shiny Life”. She then presented Rhea Longman with a certificate for completing her sixth speech. Congratulations Rhea!
Sharon Diehl completed CC#3 with her speech entitled “Changing Direction”. She has certainly used the power of positive thinking in her life. Well Done. She was evaluated by Heidi Menzi.
Rhea Longman shared her CC #7 speech “The Wives and Children of King Henry the VIII. We look forward to the second half next week. Great job, Rhea. She was evaluated by Keith McCluskie.
Sharon D’Arcey led a very exciting table topics session. She explained the very strict rules with enthusiasm and creativity! She challenged every member and most guests to talk their way out of embarrassing situations. Piet won the Table ‘topics award for his ability to talk his way out of a very sticky situation. Audrey listened carefully as quiz master and stumped us on several sayings throughout the evening.
Brent congratulated everyone on their roles and their ability to use the power of positive thinking. Rich closed the meeting right on time and encouraged members to sign up for next week’s backwards Meeting. Heidi was in charge of snacks while everyone enjoyed fellowship after the meeting.

June 9th, Wednesday, "Evening of Delight and Inspiration" at Grace United Church, Hanover. $5.00 for Spaghetti dinner @ 6 pm, Workshop begins at 7 pm.
Please confirm your attendance with Area Governor Diana Snowden 519-364-3346.

Members: just a note about our June 3rd meeting. We will discuss it further next week.
Pastor Dwarka suggested having our meeting in the church at the back, putting in 2 tables on either side at the back and moving them up to the back of the pews, then there would be space to have chairs. I believe it was suggested to have it at the Wallace church.
We would not be able to utilize the kitchen or the back room due to the
photo directory pictures taking place. Everyone would be required to
bring their own water for sure.
I believe this could work quite well for this one evening. Everyone would come in the front door of the church that evening instead of the back room or through the kitchen.

Dear Members of the Linguists of Listowel:

Hope everyone enjoyed Catching a Rainbow last evening.

Brent Jemmett called the meeting to order and introduced Jane as the chair for the evening. Jessica Kelly got everyone relaxed with the joke of the day. George Stevers are newest member tackled his role with loyal toast & timer and did a great job! Our word for the evening was reverie/revery meaning to daydream or lost in thought presented to us by Sharon Diehl. The word was used four times throughout the meeting.
Rhea Longman concluded her very descriptive Part #2 speech from #5 in the CC manual and Leo Brisebois gave a speech from the Humorous Manual entitled Distorted Messages. Written evaluations were given this evening to the speakers.

Elections was chaired by Keith Stoltz and the results are as follows:

Marilyn Hynes tried to stump the members with quotes used throughout the evening by members. Our award for best table topics went to Audrey Orth. Our meeting concluded with a general evaluation recap of our meeting by Rich Boertien and delicious snacks courtesy of George Nichol were enjoyed by all. Next week's meeting theme on Thursday May 13th is 'What Mother's Teach Us".

Date: Thursday April 29, 2010 Meeting Theme: Introvert/Extrovert

(1 min)Call meeting to order: Keith McCluskie
(3-4 min)Chairperson’s Opening Remarks: Diane Bender, ATMG
Good evening and welcome to the Linguists of Listowel April 29, 2010. The theme is Introvert/ Extrovert- What fun we will have discovering more about ourselves tonight. I read that “If it’s less painful for you to get a needle at the dentist than it is to chat with other patients in the waiting room, you might be an introvert.”
That is beyond my understanding! Does anyone here qualify?

My Introvert-Extrovert Test
says that I'm Somewhat Extroverted What does it mean? I tend to have a more extroverted personality but with a good balance of introvertedness. I can understand why people want to be by themselves.
Extroverts:
-have motives and actions that are directed outward.
-are more prone to action than contemplation.
-are typically very friendly to unknown people.
-feel empowered in social situations.
Introverts:
-have motives and actions that are directed inward.
-tend to be preoccupied with their own thoughts and feelings.
-minimize their contact with other people.
I read "...there is no such thing as a pure extrovert or a pure introvert. Such a man would be in the lunatic asylum. They are only terms to designate a certain penchant, a certain tendency...the tendency to be more influenced by environmental factors, or more influenced by the subjective factor, that's all. There are people who are fairly well balanced and are just as much influenced from within as from without, or just as little"

Jane, who is definitely somewhat extroverted, had just reached the wicket to purchase tickets to an exhibit, her friend was counting out admission money when Jane noticed the discount to seniors sign overhead. “It occured to her that she had qualified at her last birthday. So she yelled out “Wait, don’t pay full price for me, I get a senior discount. Quietly her introverted friend asked the ticket seller if he needed proof of her age. In a voice heard by everyone standing nearby he said, Lady any woman who would yell out her age like she did doesn’t have to show me proof”
(15 min) Table Topics: Jane Stoltz showed two pictures and asked members to choose one and explain what it meant to them.

Extroverts are often bad public speakers. They can be trained but they need a lot of help. The biggest obstacle is their attitude. They do not want to be trained. They must first overcome the delusion that they are good. This can be very difficult for extraverts to accept because they crave the attention - and believe they receive attention from the admiring masses. It seldom occurs to the extravert that they might simply be the loudest and perhaps an object of ridicule.
On the learning path extraverts start at the point where they don't know what they don't know. That is the most difficult person to train.
Introverts make the best public speakers.
Introverts tend to be better observers and listeners. The best speakers need to listen to their audience to see how well they are getting through. Introverts tend to be better thinkers. Specifically they think before they speak so when they say something it is clearer and more profound. Introverts listen to what they say to test it against what they want to get across. Extroverts however, just want to hear themselves talking and don't care as much about what they say.
Because introverts are not naturally born speakers they will learn the system of public speaking. They will practice the skills and techniques. They will be willing to learn. And because introverts are good thinkers they will apply the speaking techniques because they learned the 'why' as well as the 'how'. Introverts expect to make mistakes and learn from them. Introverts do not expect to be perfect while extroverts believe they already are perfect.
Introverts need to speak up to be better heard and they need to adjust their comfort level for speaking in public.
If you are an introvert - congratulations! You have the potential to be a great public speaker. If you are an extrovert - there is always hope after you get an attitude adjustment.

Linguists of Listowel
“Born to Win” was the theme for tonight’s meeting and everyone in attendance was a winner! We had almost perfect attendance. Eighteen out of twenty members were present. We also welcomed our Area Governor Diana Snowden and Trudy Baron, President of Toastmasters of Hanover. It was great to have a full house and enjoy the momentum created by so many people striving to “Listen, Laugh, Learn and Lead.”

Keith Stoltz chaired the meeting with enthusiasm and humour. He gave encouragement to all participants and answered their questions before the meeting when he checked if they were prepared for their role. Sharon Diehl called the meeting to order, which was a challenge because of the excellent attendance! Now we know we have to come early to get a seat.

George Nichol was toast and timer. He referred to the Olympics where participants were challenged to win for their country. Rich had us all laughing with his joke of the day.
Brent Jemmett gave us the word “Pelf” which refers to ill gotten gains. It was used four times. Everyone listened well to Marilyn Hynes’ emotional Literary Corner entitled “Born to Win”. Well done Marilyn.
We welcomed a new member George Stevers. Keith McCluskie performed the induction ceremony. Brian Camacho will be George’s mentor.

Area Governor Diana Snowden gave an excellent Educational session on the Competent Leader Manual. She used many examples and answered lots of questions. The Linguists of Listowel will be working hard on this manual now that they understand the requirements. Thank you Diana.
Diana Snowden also presented pins to Jane Stoltz for achieving her second competent communicator and to Diane Bender for her ACG award.

Sharon D’Arcey wowed us with her speech “Survival” Project 4 in CC manual. We are so glad she survived her airplane crash and lived to tell the tale! She used clear, vivid and forceful words to add excitement to her speech. Keith McCluskie was her evaluator and gave her many glow points and a couple of areas to grow on. Great job.

Table Topics was conducted by Heidi Menzi. She challenged members to remember inspirational moments in their lives referring to the slip of paper they chose from an envelope. There were three winners Rich, Rhea and Keith M.
Jessica Kelly presented an excellent General evaluation for a very dynamic meeting.
Sharon Diehl provided the yummy snacks for the evening.
Thanks to the members of the executive for staying later to finalize upcoming events.

Meeting Theme: Miracles Never Cease

(1 min) Call meeting to order : Rich Boertien
(3-4 min)Chairperson’s Opening Remarks Diane Bender, ATMG
Thich Nhat Hanh has said “People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child -- our own two eyes. All is a miracle – “
Our meeting theme tonight is Miracles never Cease. I believe there are at least two different kinds of Miracles – the mini Miracle and the transformational miracle.
1. The mini-miracle - this is the everyday miracles. These include getting a parking space, meeting the right person at the exact right moment, coincidences, or phone calls from just the person you were thinking of. Taken alone, they might mean very little, but as you pay attention, you realize that things are going your way. Last week I was on vacation with my grandchildren. We were at a waterpark, having a great time in the wavepool and on the slides. I had a table where we left our shoes, towels and my carryall with my camera and room key. I tried to keep an eye on that, while I supervised a very energetic four year old and a very independent 8 year old. Imagine my shock and despair when I returned to an empty table with only our shoes under the chairs! WHAT TO DO? I PRAYED FOR A MIRACLE. I checked with the life guard- she hadn’t seen anything. It seemed like an hour but within 5 minutes a young father came hurrying over to my table with the towels and carry all. He apologized that his family had accidently taken them when they gathered up their belongings. I was very thankful and decided that was a miracle that he had the integrity to come back and return my stuff and to apologize.

2. Then there are Transformational Miracles –which involve lifestyle change, usually as a result of an injury, death, divorce, career change, financial upheaval, or other crisis that forces us to confront ourselves and change our lives in a direction that enhances our passion and creativity. I think that joining toastmasters can be a transformational miracle. People who were once too shy to speak in front of an audience gain confidence and improve their leadership abilities. It takes tremendous courage to present your icebreaker as Marilyn is doing tonight. By taking this journey your life will improve in almost every area because “miracles never cease.”

The invariable mark of wisdom is to see the miraculous in the common. -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
Wayne Stoltz is a very wise guy and brings us the joke of the day.
(1-2 min) Joke of the Day: Wayne Stoltz
Leo Brisbois would agree with -- Bob Richards who said Ingenuity plus courage plus work equals miracles.
(1-2 min) Loyal Toast & Timer: Leo Brisebois, CC

The author is unknown for this quote but I am sure it is true for Sharon D’arcey who will be giving us literary corner.
“The miracle of friendship can be spoken without words... hearing unspoken needs, recognizing secret dreams, understanding the silent things that only true friend know.
(3-4 min) Literary Corner: Sharon D’Arcey
Keith Stoltz will be grammarian this evening. The other night, Keith and Jane were sitting on the front porch having a nice evening talking with each other. Suddenly, the neighbor across the street pulled up and got out of his car. He had a big bouquet of flowers and a large box of candy in his hands. As they watched, their neighbor's wife came out to greet her husband. He hugged and kissed her and gave her the box of candy and the flowers. Then they walked into their house hand-in-hand.

Jane looked at her husband Keith and said, "Why don't you ever do anything like that?" Surprised, Keith exclaimed, "Are you kidding, Jane?! I hardly know that woman!"

Bill Cosby said the fact that married couples can live together day after day is a miracle ”

Miracles are not hard to come by. They begin from the heart. -- Author Unknown
(1-3 min) Inspirational Thought: Sharon Diehl
(1-2 min) Chairperson’s Closing Remarks Diane Bender, ATMG
Speaking for myself the miracle is that I can enjoy being chairperson at toastmasters. For nine years I resisted that opportunity. Now I can look an audience in the eye and smile throughout the evening and actually breathe normally! I can use my voice in a variety of ways. Most of all, I can have fun during my term as president.
I can share my miracles by becoming the person I was meant to be. You can too by following that dream you have inside. You too can be transformed because Miracles never cease!!!
