Meeting Theme: Dancing with the Stars
7:15 Call meeting to order : Audrey Orth
Chairperson: Diane Bender, ATMG
Last weeks Theme was “It’s about time”. Since we had to cancel last week I would say It’s about time for the weather to get better- we don’t want to miss our toastmaster meetings! Wiarten Willie saw his shadow on Tuesday so we are looking at 6 more weeks of winter. This weeks them is dancing with the stars. Recently, the stars have really pulled together some amazing concerts to raise money for Haiti.
First, I would like to reflect on this. As we listen to the horrible news of the devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti, we feel we are lucky that we are so fortunate to have such a warm and supportive life here in Canada and especially here at toastmasters which has clubs around the world. More than 750 Toastmasters are located in the Port Au Prince area, one of hardest hit regions.
Everyone is digging deep into their pockets to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti. We hope that the humanitarian organizations can help Haiti with rebuilding their country and help the people with catastrophic injuries to recover. I am sure Toastmaster members will be playing a leadership role.
I would like read an exerpt from a speech from an international speech contestant in Haiti last year.
"I was motivated because I pictured in my head, my country and I wanted to give a better picture of Haiti and, more importantly, I was interested in the idea of returning with the prize”
She goes on to say “By entering, I had the firm idea of changing the image of Haiti outside”.
“Within Toastmasters, leadership is performed. At the Toastmasters, Haiti, we advocate a different vision of leadership, the spirit of sharing and empathy and that spirit is reflected in the workplace: being available, being responsible for agreeing to perform a task or mission, get involved, without complaint. The spirit of sharing strengthens the belief that TM is doing something that elevates the soul.”
As we enjoy our meeting this evening, remember that we are part of a worldwide organization that is continually helping people to learn and grow and step out of their comfort zones. We are family.

When you are dancing: To know what you are doing is an advantage. To look like you know what you are doing is essential.

Joke of the Day: Sharon Diehl

The secret of getting ahead is getting started.
Loyal Toast & Timer: Brian Camacho, ATMB

On Monday our newest member Rhea helped Jane and I judge the grade 5 speech contestants at central public school.
Grammarian: Rhea Longman gave us the word"deleterious" which is an adjective which means harmful.
Sixth Speech Award Presentation : We have a Speechcraft member from last fall who has diligently been accepting demanding roles in our toastmaster meetings Rich Boertine. There is a saying:
If you don't know where you are going,
you won't know when you get there.
Rich has a goal and he joined toastmasters to get there. Keep up the good work!

7:35 Speaker #1: (5 – 7) Jane Stoltz, ATMS #1 Humorously Speaking

7:45 Speaker #2: (15-20 min) Keith Stoltz, ATMS Professional Speakers Manual - Sales training speech.

8:10 Table Topics: Wayne Stoltz winner was Jessica Kelly.
Evaluator #1: Rich Boertien
Evaluator #2 Brent Jemmett
There is a saying “A journey of a thousand miles starts with knowing where you are going.”
Everybody uses short term goals. Spoken or unspoken. Jessica Kelly has been listening closely this evening as general evaluator. She will tell us if we met our goals and give us some suggestions on what we could do better.
General Evaluator: Jessica Kelly
Officer Training Reports
Diane, Brian, Brent, Jane
District training is huge. I really felt like I was dancing with the stars. There were excellent motivational speakers. There were over 50 people in the Presidents workshop which was very informative. There were many concerns about membership and keeping the magic number of 20 people in order to earn your dcp points. I went to the workshop on High performance leadership. You can begin it at any time but you must complete it to get your Distinguished Toastmaster designation. Biggest surprise was I could have got it for being your president this year. Keep that in mind if you are considering running for president in May. Basically you need to lead a team to reach a specific goal. I really enjoyed learning about HPL and will get my books at the next conference.

Chairperson’s Closing Remarks Diane Bender, ATMG
In 1955 Dr Smedley wrote” while most of us may have entered Toastmasters to learn to make speeches, that benefit is but the beginning of the good which may come to us, and the good we may do for mankind.”
Once again I would like to reflect on Haiti. I am sure the toastmasters there are taking a leadership role and stepping out of their comfort zones as Haitians seek to rebuild their country.

Theme tonight is prescriptions for life.
Millions of people each year want to know how to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others.
If you’re like me you want to make a difference and have a positive impact but maybe you don’t know what to do, where to go, when the right time is, or how to get others involved.
In Toastmasters we believe that improving your communication and leadership skills is a great start. It gives you a straightforward, uncomplicated and down to earth process for getting YOU involved and also to help you get OTHERS involved. Each meeting is a learning experience- You might discover something amazing, something incredible, something unbelievable.
You see new members gain confidence and experienced members challenge themselves to step out of their comfort zones and make a difference in their home, their community and their world.
I look forward to hearing your prescriptions for life this evening.

Chairperson’s Closing Remarks Diane Bender, ATMG Conclusion: I’ve enjoyed hearing your prescriptions for life this evening. Toastmasters will empower you and stretch you. They will provide a sense of accomplishment, reward you in ways you never expected and infect you with an enthusiasm that is so contagious that you will want to share with your friends and get them involved. Your executive is off to Officer training this week and will come back enthusiastic and brimming full of ideas. Have a great week. Meeting is adjourned.

Inspirational Thought for the Day:
Take twelve fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly free from old memories of bitterness, rancor and hate.
Cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past-have them fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts.
Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot this way) but prepare one day at a time. Into each day put equal parts of faith, patience, courage, work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), hope, fidelity, liberality, kindness, rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad dressing- don't do it), prayer, meditation, and one well-selected resolution. Put in about one teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor. 9:00 Adjournment

Jan 28: It's About Time, A Workshop Meeting,

Happy New Year. Welcome back to Toastmasters as we listen, laugh, learn and lead. Our theme tonight is Catch the fever. To me that means setting new goals and striving to reach them, both inside and outside of our Toastmasters club.
In many cultures and countries the month of January represents a new beginning as we set goals and try to keep New Year’s resolutions. Many of us reflect on the events of the last year and resolve to make the new year a better one as we commit to improving our lives and the lives of others.

10 years ago, I came to my first toastmaster meeting. Even though I knew I had to improve my speaking skills, it took a few invitations to psych myself up and actually come to toastmasters. All of the old memories started playing in my head. Would I make a fool of myself? Would people laugh at me? How was I ever going to figure out all of the toastmasters roles on the agenda? Maybe I should forget about the whole thing and resign myself to accepting my shyness the way it was, instead of putting myself through all this mental torture.

Then I realized that most of the problems I had in communicating all those years ago stemmed from my lack of knowledge. I simply ducked because I didn’t know what to do. But now as an adult, I was much more confident and had the power to ask questions. I could do this!
you can imagine how excited I was to receive my Advanced Communicator gold certificate in the mail yesterday.- It took a whole month to arrive! Oh well I was really too busy over Christmas to really worry about it being lost. Now it is here and I’m catching the fever to to get working on the leadership track at Toastmasters. I do have the old cl but now I’m working on the new competent leader manual. I encourage all of you to step out of your comfort zones and set new goals. It is often with one baby step at a time that we reach new levels of confidence in our speaking and communicating skills. Catch the fever.

Conclusion
I joined toastmasters after my children were grown up and I was retiring from the farrowing barns. I wanted to help sell computers on our home based computer store. I wanted to overcome my fear of speaking in front of a group. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to join toastmasters and to have had so much fun over the past 10 years. I often encourage others to join whether they are 18 or 80. Toastmasters can really make a difference in your life. Help them to catch the fever. Introduce a friend, relative or colleague to toastmasters, so that they too may experience a new beginning. You’ll bring out the best in yourself and help to bring out the best in others.

Welcome everyone

Introduce guests

Opening Remarks: I hope most of you are Dr Seuss enthusiasts- I certainly am
The Cat brings a cheerful form of chaos to a household of two young children one rainy day while their mother leaves them unattended. Bringing with him two creatures named Thing One and Thing Two, the Cat performs all sorts of wacky tricks to amuse the children. I hope you enjoy your dinner this evening and remember to let your inner child out tonight.
I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I’ve bought a big bat. I’m all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!

Loyal Toast & Timer: Leo Brisebois .

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living,
It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope.
Which is what I do and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities."
Grace: Audrey Orth
Dinner

Grammarian: Keith would have enjoyed wearing the cat costume in the movie. The Cat costume is made of Angora and human hair and was fitted with a cooling system. To keep Myers cool during the outdoor shoots, a portable air conditioner was available that connected a hose to the suit between shots. The tail and ears were battery operated.

He gave us the word Hornswoggle to use throughout the meeting. It was used 6 times.

Dr. Seuss’s publisher supplied him with a list of 400 words, ones that the publisher thought children would be learning in school. His publisher told him to cut the list in half and to try and write an interesting enough book for children. Nine months later Dr. Seuss finished The Cat In The Hat, which used 223 words that appeared on the list plus 13 words that did not. Diane closed the meeting with “The Lost Dr. Seuss Poem.

Linguists of Listowel: Listen, Laugh, Learn and Lead

There were a lot of fortunes told this evening by Chairperson Brian Camacho. Everyone participated with enthusiasm and excitement.
The theme was Fortune cookies.
Leo chose the word Faze which means disconcert. It was used at least 9 times. Sharon D'Arcey read an article about Confucious, the famous philosopher whose words of wisdom are found in many fortune cookies. Great job Sharon!
Brent Jemmett wowed us with his story telling abilities and
Richard Boertien presented speech #5 in his CC manual. He used excellent body language to demonstrate his love of curling- It almost made me want to try it again or at least go out and watch one of his games.
Table topics was all about making the most of your fortune and Brent Jemmett won. Keith, Audrey and Marie all gave excellent evaluations.
Next weeks meeting theme is the Cat in the Hat so come with some rhyming words and enjoy two ice breaker speeches. Heidi will also present speech #9 in her CC manual! Please make time in your busy christmas schedules to enjoy an evening with your toastmaster friends.

Thursday evening was full of very interesting and informative speeches by our six speechcrafters.

Lots of laughs throughout the entire meeting.

Sylvia spoke about the last ride home on that memorable Black Out, Vanessa spoke about The Battle of Food, Matt enlightened us on Difficult Births with Sheep; Susan spoke about Listen Can You Hear It and its reflection on music titles, Rich spoke about some funny Acronyms
and Royden's speech was about Saying GoodBye to Speechcraft and the friends he made at toastmasters.

Our word for the evening was MACABRE, suggesting the horror of death and decay, gruesome. Example: I've always had a somewhat macabre fascination with true life crime stories.

Please join us for the final speechcrafters presenting their speeches and graduation.

Halloween Limerick:

A big jack o lantern named Keith

Was ashamed of his big old orange teeth.

He wrapped green round his head,

Had his teeth painted red.

And now silly Keith is a wreath.

Halloween Joke:

Who did Frankenstein take to the prom?

A. His ghoul friend

What do baby ghosts wear on Halloween?

A White pillowcases.

Take care and have fun this Halloween evening and see you all next week!

Speechcraft

Words from our speechcraft coordinator after our exciting meeting on October 8, 2009
Hello Toastmasters and Speechcrafters:

What a spectacular meeting last evening, lots of laughs & tears throughout the entire meeting!

The content by Speechcrafters had a variety of interesting topics that were both stimulating and knowledgeable.

Sylvia complained about her 6 day school week growing up and in the end becoming bilingual in both English and Polish. Vanessa spoke about growing up in Bubble Town, moving away and returning to her Bubble home town routes. Matt was most passionate about preserving the family farm and encouraging consumers to shop locally. Rich spoke about doing it right the first time and take your time to get a project done correctly with pride and soak up the positive comments. Susan spoke about the frustrations of modern technology, exactly why do you need 3 remotes, when 1 should do the trick. Royden spoke passionately about encouraging people to take the time to visit people who have incurable diseases. It only takes a smile to brighten one's day!

Thank you for the most delicious treats supplied by Leo & Brent.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday weekend and see everyone next Thursday evening!

Linguists of Listowel

Jane Stoltz called the meeting to order at 7:15 pm. She welcomed seven participants to the speechcraft program. The theme of the meeting was "My favourite kind of quiet." All members, guests and speechcrafters introduced themselves.
Keith S gave the loyal toast to Canada and acted as timer for the evening program.
As grammarian Brent gave us the word Inundate. It was used at least three times.
Diane Bender presented the following Educational module on Selecting speech topics.
Madam Chair, toastmasters and speechcrafters this educational segment will help you with selecting your topic. There is a handout so you don’t have to write everything I say down. I am glad you are here and setting forward on this exciting journey to improve your communication skills. You never need to be hard on yourself. Whatever you say is perfectly acceptable. Please. Step up and step out of your comfort zone. We are here to help.

First pick a topic that you are interested in and are familiar with. You might want to begin with a statement that is exciting and challenging. For example-
I enjoy gardening -I love vegetables, my husband doesn’t! His doctor said “his life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon!

We enjoy hearing about life changing events that have happened in your life. You are the expert and can speak from personal experience. Great speeches occur when you learn from your experiences and can talk about them to others.
Some of you are probably thinking- “But nothing exciting ever happened to me!”
You could talk about a vacation that was exciting or challenging or educational.
Some speeches are organised around some problem or illness you have faced and overcome. It could focus on an actual incident-“ as I drove to work the other day…I’m sure you’ve all had close calls you could share.
Your challenge will be to compress these experiences into a relatively short speech. In speechcraft program they are only 3-5 minutes.

Second choice would be to pick a subject that you are interested in and would like to research. Be Creative. For example – are plastic bags really bad for the environment and should grocery stores be allowed to charge 5 cents for a single bag?
I always leave toastmaster meetings feeling like I have learned something new from the speeches I hear. This brings me to the next suggestion.

Third Talk about something that will interest your audience. You might get ideas from newspapers, magazines, current events, television or books you have read.

Fourth Talk about something that will educate your audience. You could talk about some of your favorite hobbies- perhaps you could persuade us to try something new after we hear your enthusiasm for your hobby.

Fifth what is the purpose of your speech? What specific point do you want to impress on your audience? This will determine your speech title and how you will open and close the speech.
Sixth how do you want to make your audience feel?
There are inspiring speeches, educational speeches, and humourous speeches and in toastmasters you will learn how to make them work for your audience.
And finally what message do you want the audience to take home with them. We often end with a challenge or something to think about.
I wish you all the best in your journey to better speaking skills. Work at your own speed, whatever you say is acceptable.
Most important is just standing up, walking up to the lectern, and speaking. Take a deep breath, smile, step up and step out of your comfort zone. Present your speech on the topic of your choice- Madam chair.
Audrey presented a sample icebreaker speech entitled "It's just the way you look at it. Everyone sang Happy Birthday to her.
Diane R. evaluated with lots of glow points and a grow point to use more pauses while the audience is laughing.
George Nichol led table topics with members speaking for one minute on a continuous story beginning with "It was a dark and foggy night when I went for a walk."
Winner was speechcrafter Matt Van Ankum.

Keith M gave the general evaluation and Heidi challenged members memories as quizmaster.
Jane asked speechcrafters to read Chapter 1,2,3 and to prepare an icebreaker speech for next week. Inspirational thought for the day was "A little thought and a little kindness are often worth more than a great deal of money" John Ruskin
Snack was provided by Audrey Orth. The meeting was adjourned at 9 pm.
